Organizing - Overview

Great Tips
  • Use a day planner to organize your appointments and tasks. There are plenty of free planners online.
  • Organize your mail - inbox, filing, and reading.
  • Deal with your inbox and file each day.
  • Spend 5 - 10 minutes at the end of each day clearing off your desk. You'll feel more productive when you walk into your office the next morning.
  • If you are disorganized, it is probably causing you stress.

Get Organized!

Do you spend time looking for that piece of paper, file, or paperwork that you knew you just saw this morning? Does your desk look like a disaster? Do you think this makes you productive or look busy? Not only does it look unprofessional, it makes you look unorganized. You don't want to come across that way, do you?

Stop telling yourself that you must clean up someday and do it today - then do it everyday. When the day is over, the papers should be filed, the files returned and the office supplies put in the drawer. If you are currently working on several projects, either put them in a large desk drawer (reserved for current projects) or stack them neatly on your credenza. If you haven't looked at them for more than a couple of days, action them or put them away. Don't leave them out while you wait for a call or wait for information. That's what your task section of your day planner is for - to remind you of what you have to do.
